Speaker: Bobby Walls-Thuma
Title: The Principles of Generosity: A Political Science and National Security Perspective
Synopsis: This talk will examine global political ideology as it relates to the two types of political generosity, localist and universalist. International data on the subject will be discussed in order to show how, in a globalized world, themes of political generosity that are based on political ideology tend towards consistency worldwide. The discussion will conclude with comments on how increased measures of generosity can potentially lead to a greater degree of global security for states throughout the world.
Bio: Bobby Walls-Thuma is a government and economics teacher at North Country Union High School that holds a B.S. degree in political science and international relations, and a M.A. in history. He is currently working on a second master's degree in National Security Studies with the intent of pursuing a PhD in Global Security Studies. Prior to serving as a teacher, Bobby was a counterterrorism intelligence analyst with the United States Department of Homeland Security. His research interests include the impact of globalization on terror network recruitment, the Arctic, U.S.-Russian relations, and nuclear proliferation.

Speaker: Gabryel Gianoni
Title: The Scott's Cove Lakeshore Enhancement Project **OR Spring Clean-Up Day

Synopsis: The Memphremagog Watershed Association (MWA) is working with the Vermont Land Trust and the City of Newport on a lakeshore enhancement project at Scott's Cove and Prouty Beach in Newport. This work involves invasive species removal of reed grass, also known as phragmites, and the establishment of native vegetation in its place to improve species diversity, wildlife habitat, and public access. Gabryel Gianoni, the MWA Project Coordinator, will speak on the goals and current status of the project. She will also take the time to review invasive reed grass identification and removal methods and highlight the importance of restoring native plant communities.
Bio: Gabryel Gianoni has 10 years of experience working with nonprofits on habitat restoration projects and monitoring the success of restoration through vegetation and wildlife surveys. She has worked in Pennsylvania with the Natural Heritage Program monitoring significant natural communities and rare, threatened, and endangered species. She has also worked in Nevada restoring floodplain habitat and monitoring wildlife responses to restoration activities. Gabryel joined the MWA team in the beginning of 2023, where she works with the local community to identify, develop, design, and implement habitat restoration and water quality improvement projects across the Memphremagog watershed.

Speaker: Sybille Andersen
Title: Reflections from a Midwife: Changes and Challenges
Synopsis: Midwifery is a profession that is centered in women's rights and empowerment-giving birth can and should be an experience that strengthens women not just in the long hours (days) of birth but in future challenges we all experience in life. Sybille will share her experience working for women's rights in reproductive health through her time as a midwife and also share how we all (men, too) can advocate for choice in birthing and in all things healthcare.
